Churchill Living

Hythe

Churchill Living are bringing forward proposals for a new retirement living development at the former police station building in Hythe village.

Welcome

The site is located on the corner of Jones Lane and West Street, within close proximity of facilities at Hythe Marina Village to the north and the many facilities in the village centre to the east.

The former police station site has been vacant for over 8 years since it was vacated by the Hampshire Constabulary in February 2017. The site also includes the former skate park which closed following a health and safety inspection 7 years ago in 2018.

Part of the site has been subject to two previous proposals for retirement living. While these proposals have not progressed through the planning process, the principle of a residential development for older people has been accepted and the previous proposals were not able to progress owing to design concerns and detailed planning issues that can be resolved through the planning process.

Churchill’s vision is for a sensitively designed high-quality apartment building of 45x one-bedroom and  two-bedroom apartments and 6x two storey cottages.

The emerging design seeks to reflect local architecture with a traditional design utilising locally prevalent materials such as red brick, off-white render, hung tiles with slate and clay style roof tiles. The design seeks to break up the massing of the apartments presenting the building as a series of townhouses of domestic scale.

As well as repairing the significant negative impact to the street scene left by the dilapidated former police station building over the past 6 years, the proposals would make a significant contribution locally in terms of social, economic and environmental benefits.

Tthe site has been subject to two previous proposals for retirement living. While these proposals have not progressed through the planning process, the principle of a residential development for older people has been accepted by a government appointed Planning Inspector, with the previous proposals denied permission based on design concerns,

Benefits

Regenerating the area

The proposals would bring the vacant former police station site into beneficial use and repair the scar left on the street scene that has been left for the past 8 years since the police station closed.

Supporting local businesses

The site is close to shops and essential services in Hythe reducing the need to travel and delivering a significant uplift in expenditure at local shops.

Meeting the needs of older people

Moving to a Churchill community allows residents to maintain independence and enjoy an active, low-maintenance lifestyle in a supportive, age-friendly environment.

Reducing demand on the health services

Retirement communities reduce the risk of health challenges by helping to reduce loneliness as well as improving safety and security.

Freeing up homes

Providing homes at the top of the housing ladder helps release properties back onto the market for local families and, in turn, homes for first-time buyers.

Manns Lodge (Cranleigh)

The location of my new apartment couldn’t be better, we’re right next to the High Street and everything we need is on our doorstep. I lived a bit further out before, and whilst I can still drive at the moment it’s nice to know that I won’t have to rely on the car in future.

Invicta Lodge (Westwood Cross)

I previously lived in a three-bed semi-detached house just 500 yards away from Invicta Lodge. Moving here is the best thing I ever did, my apartment is just right and it’s nice to have a bit of company around me as well as safety and security.
